If you are having a very extravagant or simple wedding, or you are too busy with your career, you may feel that you may just not be able to organize the wedding by yourself. Hiring a wedding planner may seem like the best idea. For some people it is a fantastic idea, but it is not for everyone. If you or people in your family are ones who needs to be in control during your wedding then a planner may not be right for you. You may already have your own wedding plans and ideas.

Having a bridesmaid or groomsman to help out from the very beginning is also important. This is because if plans need to be changed or altered on your wedding day, they will be there to jump right in to help

If you are planning a formal engagement party, this may be a good precursor and test of your planning skills for your wedding. Call it a sort of practice run for the real thing! You can learn a lot from planning a single event and get a lot of your groundwork done for your wedding during your engagement.

First of all, you need something to organize all your details. This could be either a very large calendar, where you could pencil everything in and keep track of the days. This may come in handy anyway to give you an idea of how fast time really does go. Other options are a large folder or binder to categorize your wedding guest list, florist, reception, caterer, etc or a computer or an organizer with the software capabilities to record all that needs to be done. Nowadays, there are applications on the Iphone to help organize and plan your wedding as well. These apps are handy and easy to work with and will be with you wherever you go, whether it’s with your dresser, caterer or while you are out picking out centerpieces.

Secondly, make a list of things you need to do. Make a list of the appointments you need to make as well. The internet is a great resource and has many useful wedding sites where you can review themes, styles, venues and can share ideas with others just like you through blogs and chats. When you think of something you need to do – just add it to the list. Put as much information as you can on your wedding list. More information is always better later on and put your first impression of every vendor you contact. This will help you later on in your final decision making. If you have been recommended by someone, put that down too on your list. Ask for discounts and deals if you book early.

Create a back up for everything you do or book. That doesn’t mean only to back up your information on your computer but call a few vendors and venues as backups for your wedding. This information is crucial in negotiating prices with your first picks, but also important just in case your vendor, resource or venue falls through at the last minute.

There you have it, a few tips to get yourself started on the road to planning your wedding. Use these pointers to get started and do not forget to enjoy yourself during this part of your life together as well. Sure there will be stressful moments, but remember the reason you both got yourselves in this situation in the first place and relax. It’s only going to get better after this.
