Pub Signs

The Pub Sign has come a long way and carries with it a history. Few people realize that original pubsigns were originally used in Old World England dating back over two thousand years. An antique pubsign can tell a tale of a town’s history. A lot of thought went into naming a pub with the right sign – many of the times it involved a scandal, religion, royalty who visited the old English or Irish pub or the town’s hero’s deeds. Looking at a pubsign carefully and actually “reading” the pub sign can tell you the story behind the pub or the town it is located.
Interestingly, the Romans brought the first real pub to England in the first century AD! The first sign wasn’t made of wood or metal but was actually a bunch of vine leaves or a bush!  To this day, some pubs in England are called Hollybush named after the bush in front of it! Soon the pubs wanted to be linked to the Church and monasteries and so picture signs of saints or angels were used for the illiterate public like St Peter or the Ark.
Several centuries later, Henry VII was in power and was an avid sportman. During that time, pubsign developed a twist to it – pubsigns such as the Greyhound, The Foxhole, the Bulldog and Hunting Signs became popular with the public. To this day, these hunting signs are a popular favorite with hunters and outdoorsmen.
As the industrial revolution swept across Europe and the New World, the pub became the watering hole for traders and factory workers.  Drinking signs then become popular as a way a pub could tout their brew. The Beer Tavern, the English Pub and Irish pub sign are testimony to this time. A trip across the pond is not complete without visiting a classic Irish or English pub to this day. With so many migrant workers moving into the cities, came scandal and so the pubsign depicted more risqué entertainment that was available. The same thing was happening  in America with the pioneers exploring the Wild West. The Wicked Lady in Hertfordshire is one such popular pub that is open to this day. Our tribute to this era includes the Old Saloon pubsign that depicts the women of that time.
Pubsigns  are a part of history, recording it in a unique way. It includes religious, scandalous and heroic events in its pictures. So the next time you spot a vintage pub sign, be sure to stop for a moment to look at it and experience history in the present.
