There’s an interesting historical background on shields where its purpose was a “personal armor” used for defense and to seize attacks. Shield sizes varied from a large one to protect the entire body to small thinner ones for fleeting bows away.

In the prehistoric times, the Romans carried large shields called a “scuta” which had a distinct oval shape. This was then gradually curved at the top and sides to produce the common rectangular shape of shields.

In the modern times, today, shields are still given the respect as a protection device as most police forces around the world use them for riot control. A new introduction in the world of shields is the bullet resistant shield with a bullet proof glass viewing point to enable the user to attack fire without being exposed. Many non-martial campaigns also utilize shielding of some kind, like a space craft with heat shields or lead shield clothing for people who work in the company of ionizing radiation. Examples of these are dentists, hospital attendants or even patients.

The shield has evolved from the ancient times to the modern world of today to portray heroic accomplishments in the form of emblem and signs. For instance movie studio Warner Bros uses a shield inscribed with the WB logo. Many awards have been altered from their standard trophy to proudly presented shields for the appreciation or admiration for the receiver.  

Shields hang proudly on the wall and continue to tell the tale of bravery or excellence of its owners with the years to come. It doesn’t go out of style and is a gift to be cherished.
